The Travel Roller 18” ($49.99) is half as long as the MELT Soft Roller, so it's more portable for travel. However it cannot be used to perform any moves where your spine lies the length of the roller.
The Soft Roller 36” ($79.99), although significantly longer and less portable, enables you to perform sequences where you lay your spine the length of the roller. This is particularly significant with respect to performing the Rebalance Sequence, which is a foundational sequence in MELT. The Rebalance Sequence offers direct, tolerable compression on the spine and gives you an opportunity to enhance ground force control and core stability.
If you're just starting out with MELT and are trying to figure out the best roller for you, we typically encourage our clients to choose the Soft Roller, as it will ensure you can perform the aforementioned sequences that are foundational to the method. Once you have learned to MELT with the Soft Roller, the Travel Roller is a great next step for helping "mobilize" your MELT practice and take it with you wherever you go!
The Soft Half Roller 36” ($49.99), provides the same gentle stimulation as the full roller while offering the stability and/or lower height needed for specialized populations. The Soft Half Roller can be used for Rebalance and Release moves or any Rehydrate move where you lie on the roller. The Soft Half Roller is ideal for many different types of individuals, including those who are older, who have scoliosis, who have experienced a stroke or head trauma, or who have Parkinson’s or other neurological disorders. Additionally, our MELT for Pilates Program uses the Half Roller to both modify and enhance the authentic Pilates mat exercises and create specificity that is typically only found in private apparatus work.
This is the only half-round roller designed specifically for the MELT Method, offering gentle compression without unnecessary discomfort. Note: What makes the roller a "half" roller is it's width, not it's length. It has one rounded side and one flat side. The roller is 36 inches long and 6 inches across.
We highly recommend purchasing a copy of the MELT Method Book to use in conjunction with the Half Roller. While there are no specific instructions for using this roller style, you can still follow the MELT Maps and moves in the book. The only moves you cannot do are Gliding, Rinsing, and any additional moves that require the roller to move. We also recommend finding a MELT Instructor near you who has taken the MELT Instructor Level 1 Training, as they can instruct you as to how to best use this product.
For the Rebalance Sequence, we generally suggest the MELT Half Roller for those with balance issues (using the flat side down) or spinal issues (using the flat side up).
